A dramatic poster of impressive scale, produced to celebrate the land reform policies of the Republican government in the months following the fascist rebellion. Renau (1907-1982) was among the most talented and most prolific of the left-wing artists engaged by the Ministerio de Propaganda. Following the Civil War, he was captured and briefly interned in a French concentration camp, but managed to escape to Mexico in 1939. In Mexico he pursued a long and distinguished career as a muralist, painter, and political propagandist. In 1966 Renau relocated to East Germany, where he published his classic Fata Morgana USA: the American Way of Life, a book of photomontaged images highly critical of North American consumer culture.
