[Item #15557] Darius Green and his Flying Machine. John T. TROWBRIDGE.

Darius Green and his Flying Machine

New York: Houghton Mifflin & Co., 1910. First Edition. 12mo. Cloth boards; publisher's pictorial binding; 54pp; 1 leaf of publisher’s advertisements. Original drawing on half title page, unattributed. Illustrated by Wallace Goldsmith. Pencil inscription to front free endpaper: "Bequest of Charles H. Taylor October 4, 1948". Edges slightly rubbed with light soil on one leaf; else a tight, well-preserved copy in about fine condition.

Amusing poetic fantasy in which a young boy who dreams to fly constructs a set of wings, leaps from his window and like Icarus falls to the earth below. The playful drawing on the front free endpaper depicts a plane tumbling down while a caricature of an African American gazes upward, exclaiming "Mussy! Ah trusts dat de boss am bringin his stummick down wif him". Although unattributed and unsigned, certain resemblances in style cause us to strongly suspect it to be the work of Goldsmith.

Price: $150.00
