Freeland: A Social Anticipation. UTOPIAN FICTION, Theodor HERTZKA, transl Arthur Ransom.

Freeland: A Social Anticipation

New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1891. First American Edition. Excellent copy of Hertzka's influential Utopia, first published at Leipzig in 1890; the English translation appeared in London the same year, with the rather less common American edition following a year later. "As fiction, Freiland...(is) not important, but the society portrayed -- the gentle, pleasant, though hard-working life of Freeland's inhabitants -- is certainly high on the scale of major utopian proposals" (Lewis, p.89). Publisher's green cloth boards, stamped in gilt; xxiv, 443pp; 12pp publisher's catalogue at rear. A tight, attractive copy with minor rubbing at board edges and spine ends, Very Good to Near Fine. LEWIS p.87. NEGLEY 562 (the London edition).
