Highly contentious Malian author's first novel, in the belly-band announcing the awarding of the Prix Renaudot, considered the most prestigious literary prize in France after the Prix Goncourt. Ouologuem was the first African to be awarded the prize, though he would later be charged with plagiarizing Graham Greene and Andre Schwartz-Bart in some passages of the book leading to its being banned in France until recently.
