Back to Stay

New York: Viking Press, 1929. First Trade Edition. Octavo. Brown linen over boards; applied title stamps to spine and front cover; dustjacket; 331pp. Cloth a bit faded on boards; slight wear and soil; Very Good. In the pictorial dustwrapper, with a small (ca 1/4") puncture on spine panel, else just lightly worn. First regular edition, following a privately-printed edition of 100 signed copies.

Novel of New England religious hypocrisy (but not, alas, of late 19th-c. lesbian menage-a-trois), by a Cape Cod author. From the jacket copy: "This remarkable first novel tells the story of a New England rebel. Dixi's love for Ruth and for their illicit child, and Esther's love for Dixi, are strands in a pattern that includes hate and superstition, midnight encounters, tarrings and featherings, evangelism and human sacrifice..." Just don't get your hopes up (like we did): Dixi's a man.
