Number 139 of 1000 copies of the limited first edition (reissued the same year without a limitation). Bright, clean copy with mild rubbing at spine ends.

Exposé of the failure of American industrial society to provide decent wages or living conditions for the majority of its working-class citizens. The book grew out of Nearing's lectures on economics at the Rand School of Social Science and was heavily informed by his experience as Secretary of the Pennsylvania Child Labor Committee from 1905-07. Illustrated throughout with photographic plates (halftones) depicting the squalor of working-class life, including a number of well-known images by Lewis Hine.
