Covers chipped at extremities, with brief loss at upper right corner of front wrapper, with loss of a couple of letters; brief loss to spine at crown; text tanned but not particularly fragile; Very Good overall, showing less than typical wear. First appearance of London's tragic short novel portraying the rise and fall of a San Francisco boxer, later published separately by The Century Co. (1913). London was himself a talented amateur boxer, and an ardent proponent of reform in the shadowy world of professional boxing. London's widow Charmian called "The Abysmal Brute" a "...cleanly conceived bit of propaganda for the purifying of the prize-ring." This magazine issue features a four-color cover by S.M. Arthurs and short stories by Frederick Bechdolt, Francis Lynde, Roy Norton, Hulbert Footner, and others. 8vo.
